The Gasteig Cultural and Conference Centre, Munich Germany – 16th and 17th September 2019

Launchspace’s Special Two-Day Space Mechanisms Course

For the third consecutive ESMATS, Launchspace is providing a special edition of its basic space vehicle mechanisms course in the same location as ESMATS 2019.

NOTE: This course is not part of ESMATS 2019 and a separate attendance registration and fee are required through Launchspace.

This course explores the technologies required for the successful design of moving mechanical assemblies in the space environment and offers a detailed look at many of the key components common to most mechanisms such as ball bearings, motors and feedback devices. With this background, the high-performance materials required for operation in space are reviewed, emphasizing compatibility with the space environment and offering some background in the metallurgy, chemistry and fabrication of those materials. Examples of some of the many types of mechanisms will be included for illustration. In addition, the mechanisms’ relationship and interfaces with other vehicle systems will be explored, as a mechanism usually becomes an important part of the vehicle’s structural, thermal, contamination, survivability and pointing subsystems.

The course includes an interactive troubleshooting example to demonstrate principles involved in understanding how mechanisms should work, illustrating the important subtleties involved in designing and using mechanisms and providing some troubleshooting skills.

This course is offered as a complementary course with the other two courses at ESMATS 2019: The Space Tribology and Advanced Mechanisms Courses. Launchspace’s Space Vehicle Mechanisms course serves as a prerequisite for advanced topics in this field and provides a thorough understanding of all mechanism fundamentals needed for the more specialized courses.

Instructor: Bill Purdy
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERABill has over 30 years of hands-on experience in the space engineering field with wide-ranging involvement in both spacecraft mechanisms and systems engineering disciplines. Mr. Purdy has been one of the leaders of the space mechanism industry’s transition from explosive release mechanisms to non-explosive devices. His involvement in numerous space endeavors includes key roles on well over 25 successfully flown mechanisms. In addition, he has worked on mechanisms for 33 flown spacecraft. As an educator and space industry consultant to both government and industry, Mr. Purdy applies his broad experience to bring out a clear understanding of space mechanisms, their operation, keys to success and their relationship to the overall system program success. Mr. Purdy was the Associate Editor of the industry-standard handbook Space Vehicle Mechanisms – Elements of Successful Design and author of the chapter on non-explosive release mechanisms. He has published eight Aerospace Mechanisms Symposia Papers and was the 1999 winner of the Herzl Award.

Registration and Fees:
This course will be held on the 2 days prior to ESMATS 2019 so that delegates can combine attendance at this course with attendance at the ESMATS. It is currently planned that the course will be held at the Gasteig Cultural and Conference Centre in Munich, Germany.

This course is not part of the ESMATS 2019 Symposium. A separate fee is payable for delegates attending this course. Coffee breaks and lunch will be provided, but delegates will need to organize their own travel and accommodation.
